Christmas Planning Timeline: What to Do From November to Boxing Day

By Tuan · Published

Most Christmas stress comes from doing everything in the same two weeks. Spreading the jobs across November and December makes each one smaller, and leaves the last few days for actually enjoying it. This timeline works back from Christmas Day, which in 2026 falls on a Friday, 25 December, with Boxing Day on Saturday, 26 December.

The weeks are a guide, not a rulebook. If you're reading this in December, start with the current week and squeeze the earlier jobs into a single afternoon.

Early November (from Sunday 1 November): decide the big things

This is the planning week. Nothing gets bought yet.

Friday 6 – Friday 13 November: gifts and gift exchanges

Friday 13 – Friday 20 November: shop the list

Friday 20 – Friday 27 November: cards, decorations, food plan

Friday 27 November – Friday 4 December: post and decorate

Friday 4 – Friday 11 December: wrap and confirm

Friday 11 – Friday 18 December: shopping and prep

Friday 18 – Thursday 24 December: final week

Christmas Day (Friday 25 December)

Work from your timed plan. Pick a target eating time and count backwards: when the main goes in, when it comes out to rest, and when the sides go in. Hand out jobs: someone on drinks, someone on washing up, someone keeping an eye on the timer.

Leftovers: USDA guidance on that same turkey page is to discard turkey, stuffing and gravy left at room temperature for more than 2 hours, divide leftovers into smaller portions to cool quickly, and use refrigerated leftovers within 3 to 4 days.

Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December) and after

A printable to keep it all in one place

You can follow this timeline with a notebook. If you'd like it on paper ready to fill in, my Christmas Planner Printable has a holiday plan and countdown checklist from November, a December 2026 calendar, a card list, a baking plan with shopping list, menus for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the 26th, and pages for after the holidays. The Holiday Season Bundle has this planner plus the gift budget spreadsheet, the sales shopping tracker, the Thanksgiving planner and the gift exchange organizer: five tools for $3, instead of $5 if bought separately at their $1 minimum prices.

Disclosure: the planner, cooking timeline calculator and bundle are my own products on Payhip. The planner and the calculator are $1 each, and the bundle is $3. Dates above are for 2026. Food safety points are from the USDA page linked above, so always follow the guidance on your food's packaging and from your local food safety agency.
